Keep Moving Forward
by rchackman
Photo of Julie Moss at Ironman Kona in 1982, undoubtedly one of the iconic moments in triathlon history. Here she is near the finish of one of the most grueling endurance events in the world. With a short lead, Julie could no longer run after swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26 miles so she tried walking. Her legs buckled. So she tried to stand and walk again. Her legs buckled yet another time. So she did the only thing that she was able….she crawled to the finish line even after being passed at the very end! She showed amazing fortitude in the face of a struggle. Read Julie’s thoughts on that race here.
What is it that motivates you to keep moving forward?
I agree ; you can’t sit back and hope good things will happen – you got to make them happen!
Well said….that is true in sport and in the game of life 🙂
what an amazing story. I am in awe of her. I want to be her when I grow up. That’s what keeps me going.
hahaha. me too. maybe one day 😉 if you wish upon a star…
Seriously though…..Amazing story!
Hey thanks for liking my post! This is so inspirational!! I love reading things like this! They keep pushing whenever they have nothing left!
Likewise. Glad you enjoyed it ! We all need a dose of motivation daily !
What are you running or training for next?
Next up is Ironman 70.3 Florida in May but the ultimate goal for this season is the Great Floridian Triathlon in October.
What about you? What are you gearing towards?
That is awesome. I have heard about the Great Floridian Triathlon! Good luck with that! I have 2 mud runs coming up in May and June and then after that I am full force training for the Whiterock Dallas Full Marathon in December. I am going to throw a half marathon in there somewhere too. Ultimate goal is Rouge Orleans in Feb. and my full!
Awesome! Sounds like you have a full season planned. You ever want to talk training, you know where to go….and make sure to keep us readers updated 🙂 !
How inspiring!! I just posted something on my blog that has crossed out “Good things come to those who wait” and below it says in BOLD “Good things come to those who work their asses off and never give up!” What a fighter!
that’s an awesome picture. Very inspiration!
My motivation is the fact that I am raising much needed money for the wonderful organisation that helped support us in the care of my disabled neice and the belief that my neice is probably looking down from heaven laughing her ass off at how ridiculous I look while I am out training 🙂
There is a video on YouTube of Julie Moss’s 1982 finish…it’s amazing and she is such an inspiration,
Astounding! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVKqFAPdjIA
I am in awe of her. Such courage and determination. I have seen clips of this event many times, and while there is no doubt that she is truely amazing, it always raises the debate in my mind: how far should an athlete be allowed to compete in an organised event, if it is clear they are in trouble, before being asked to retire from it? Oh, i have no answer, I can argue both ways… Just something that always come to mind with this clip.
I agree, you can definitely argue both ways! Growing up playing sports, I always tried to discern whether I was just hurt or injured. An injury hangs around until treated properly.
In the article I linked to above, Julie says that she was hurting because she was in glycogen debt and basically running on fumes.
This is my first visit to your blog, and I think I’m going to enjoy this blog! Awesome inspiration boost for the day, thanks for sharing.
thank you ! come again soon 😉
Thank you so for the post demonstrating that we all can do much more than others (and we, ourselves) think we can.
I have a favorite Chinese proverb:
“Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the one doing it.”
Amazing woman, wasn’t she…and cannot we all be?
Thank you again!
I really like that proverb! thanks for sharing.
I agree, we are certainly capable of great things….each and every one of us on this Earth! If we believe and work hard to achieve.
Hi: many thanks for getting some time of creating up this advice. I always seek to even further my comprehension of items. Whether I consent or disagree, I really like specifics. I remember the previous days once the only supply of data was the library or even the newspaper. They both equally feel so out of date. : )
Wow . . . What an inspirational story of perseverance and tenacity. As I was born in that year, I hadn’t ever heard Julie’s story. Thank you for sharing it on her behalf.
What motivates me to keep moving forward is the understanding that age is simply but a number. If I put in the work, I can be strong, I can be flexible, I can have both stamina and endurance. The choice is mine — but I have to work for it.
Blessings,
Cara
I couldn’t agree more Cara! Well said 🙂
Inspiring story…what keeps me moving? The reaction I get from people who I tell I am training for a triathlon. I want to be moving when I am much older, and that won’t happen sitting on the couch!
Well said 🙂 !
Great sentiments! Thanks for liking my blog, which also led me to your site. Can’t wait to see what other insights you have to share!
